Sir Jim Ratcliffe to invest 200 million euros in strengthening Manchester United's midfield this summer! Despite having an extra player, they were completely outplayed by Newcastle, exposing their weaknesses.

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was present at St James' Park on Wednesday but witnessed a defeat. Despite having an extra player for over half the game, Erik ten Hag's team lost 1-2 to Newcastle United in a last-minute defeat. British media reports that this will strengthen Ratcliffe's determination to reinforce the squad in the summer transfer window, especially in the midfield area, where he is set to allocate a budget of up to 200 million euros to completely overhaul this position.

After Newcastle's Jacob Murphy was sent off for a dive, Manchester United's performance deteriorated further, with slow passing and inaccurate shooting. The midfield was particularly weak; although Casemiro scored a header to equalize, his and academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo's overall performances were unsatisfactory.

Especially the 20-year-old England international Kobbie Mainoo, who delivered arguably his worst performance since regaining a starting spot. He made numerous mistakes in possession, largely due to his weakness in physical duels, which allowed Newcastle's midfield to completely dominate United. Moreover, this scenario has become a common occurrence in matches between the two sides over recent seasons.

It is worth noting that Newcastle's key midfielder and captain, Bruno Guimarães, was absent due to injury. Even so, the depleted Magpies' midfield still outperformed United's, which speaks volumes. Newcastle's midfielders remained far superior in physicality and strength compared to United's.

Newcastle's approach was highly aggressive, particularly Joelinton, who overpowered Casemiro. United captain Bruno Fernandes expressed his frustration, clashing with Newcastle's players at halftime. Eventually, Ten Hag substituted Casemiro early as the 34-year-old Brazilian defensive midfielder was visibly fatigued.

In the post-match press conference, Ten Hag emphasized that the team must learn from this defeat, and the club's hierarchy must do the same. This summer, the club plans a major overhaul of the midfield. United's current midfielders lack physical presence, an issue that must be addressed in the summer transfer window.

Several midfielders have already been linked with Manchester United, with many rumored to command transfer fees potentially reaching £100 million. Newcastle's midfield duo Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali are among the candidates, along with Nottingham Forest's Adam Wharton, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, and Wolverhampton's João Gomes. It remains to be seen whom the Red Devils will ultimately pursue.

This is not entirely up to Manchester United; competition from rivals and the players' preferences are also crucial. For instance, their primary target, Forest's core player Morgan Gibbs-White, is also desired by Manchester City. In the January transfer window, City secured the signings of António Silva and Marc Guéhi, whom United had targeted.

Both Manchester clubs have shown interest in signing the 23-year-old Gibbs-White, but City confidently believe they are in the lead and that the player prefers a move to the Etihad Stadium over Old Trafford. According to talkSPORT radio, after Forest's 2-2 draw with City, Pep Guardiola's side is even more determined to sign Gibbs-White this summer and is confident that the lifelong City fan will not refuse the move.

It is also reported that Newcastle's Brazilian international Bruno Guimarães similarly favors a move to Manchester City, although United still hold hope, as City cannot sign every midfielder. Provided Ten Hag can secure Champions League qualification, the Red Devils remain an attractive destination.
