MU's legendary son banned for 6 matches due to insulting opponent

MU's young talent Jack Fletcher has received a heavy penalty from the English Football Association following a controversial remark made during an EFL Trophy match earlier in the season.

The 18-year-old midfielder has been banned for 6 matches after using offensive language during an altercation with a Barnsley player. The incident occurred in October during a match between MU's youth team and Barnsley. At the time, Jack Fletcher was unexpectedly shown a direct red card in the 62nd minute, leaving many spectators confused about what had happened. It was only when the English FA's disciplinary report was published that the full sequence of events became clear.

According to referee Will Davis, he was standing about a meter away from Fletcher when he heard the Manchester United youngster shout at an opponent that he was a "gay boy." This is considered a serious disciplinary offense involving abusive language. The 18-year-old player admitted to saying it and did not dispute the referee's decision.

However, in his statement submitted to the disciplinary panel, Fletcher explained that he had been fouled twice by the opponent when the ball was out of play. One incident occurred just before Barnsley scored, when he was brought down in a challenge. Shortly after, Fletcher stated he was also stepped on the heel while the game was stopped.

The Manchester United youngster said he tried to remain calm and reported the heel-stepping incident to the referee. But after Barnsley scored their third goal, the opponent continued to taunt him regarding his father Darren Fletcher and his twin brother Tyler Fletcher.

According to Jack Fletcher, it was these taunts about his family that caused him to lose his composure and respond to the opponent with the controversial remark. The disciplinary panel acknowledged video evidence showing Fletcher had indeed been caught on the foot earlier, but this did not justify the use of offensive language.

Under English FA regulations, offenses of this nature can result in bans ranging from 6 to 12 matches. Six matches is the minimum penalty, and Fletcher received the lowest sanction within the disciplinary framework.

In addition to the six-match suspension, the young player must also pay a £1,500 fine and is required to complete a direct education program on awareness and behavior. This course must be finished by June 2, 2026. Failure to complete it by the deadline could result in an indefinite suspension from playing.

In a statement released after the penalty was announced, Fletcher apologized and admitted it was a mistake made in a moment of anger. He affirmed he did not intend to offend the LGBTQ+ community and stated that the remark does not reflect his personal values or character. The 18-year-old also said he rarely uses such language and deeply regrets his actions.
