A double against India helps Ngân Thị Vạn Sự temporarily rank second in the Asian Cup 2026 women's top scorer list.
Ngân Thị Vạn Sự is becoming the focal point of the Vietnamese women's national team at the 2026 Women's Asian Cup finals, as she temporarily holds second place in the top scorer standings after the opening match. The double against India not only secured a crucial 2-1 victory for the home team, but also allowed the 2001-born midfielder to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
In the opening match on the evening of March 4, the Vietnamese women's team faced many challenges as India started confidently and created a balanced game. In that context, Vạn Sự knew how to make the difference. In the 30th minute, she intelligently broke free after combining with a teammate before unleashing an accurate shot into the far corner, opening the scoring for Coach Mai Đức Chung's side.
In the second half, India equalized, making the match tense. As time ticked into the final minutes, many anticipated a draw. However, in the third minute of added time, Vạn Sự shone once more with a decisive goal, securing a thrilling 2-1 victory for the Vietnamese women's national team.
Two goals in the opening match helped Vạn Sự rise to second place in the race for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup top scorer. After the first round, only she and Myong Yu Jong of the North Korean national team scored more than one goal. While Vạn Sự scored a double, Myong Yu Jong impressed with a hat-trick against Uzbekistan, temporarily taking the lead with three goals.
Sharing after the match, Vạn Sự emphasized the team's fighting spirit: the players gave over 200% effort and constantly encouraged each other when facing difficulties. She also praised the coaching staff's tactical preparation, a key factor that helped the Vietnamese team maintain focus until the final moments.
With her current form, the midfielder from Nghệ An is expected to further improve her scoring record when the Vietnamese women's national team faces Chinese Taipei on March 7. If she continues to score, Vạn Sự could very well create a turning point in her personal race, while also opening up opportunities for the team to advance further in this year's tournament.
